Silicon Valley Group Seeks to Give Area an Edge

Cities across Silicon Valley are trying to capture some of the corporate growth unfolding in the region. In San Mateo, that has resulted in a public-private partnership called the Edge.

The effort was launched in late 2009 as an initiative of the San Mateo Area Chamber of Commerce and also is funded by companies with offices in the area, such as mutual-fund company Franklin Templeton and online software company Salesforce.com Inc. The goal of the Edge, which is structured as a nonprofit, is to help the mid-Peninsula region from South San Francisco to Redwood City to be more business-friendly and to attract new companies into the neighborhood.

So far, the San Mateo City Council has approved $75,000 in funding for the Edge and has agreed to put in an additional $50,000, contingent on whether the group raises a matching $50,000 from corporate sponsors. The Edge has held a forum for businesses and entrepreneurs to discuss local issues and is now working on projects such as getting downtown San Mateo wired with better high-speed broadband, among other things.

Apple Sued Over Mobile App Privacy

Apple and four app developers have been hit with a lawsuit that alleges violations of computer fraud and privacy laws by allowing ad networks to access users’ personal information.

The suit was filed on Thursday by the law firm KamberLaw on behalf of Jonathan Lalo, a Los Angeles County resident, in federal court in San Jose, California. It seeks class-action status.

The suit was filed less than a week after the Wall Street Journal published an article raising privacy concerns over the transmission of personal information based on a study of 101 mobile apps on Apple’s iPhone and phones that run Google’s Android operating system. The complaint, which sites the Journal investigation, names app developers Pandora, Dictionary.com, The Weather Channel and Backflip Studios, the maker of the Paper Toss app, as well as Apple.

Breaking: FCC’s Copps Voting “Yes” on Net Neutrality Plan

The waiting is all but over. Michael Copps, a Democratic member of the Federal Communications Commission, says he plans to vote in favor of Chairman Julius Genachowski’s proposed rules on network neutrality. This makes the passage of the rules in a vote scheduled for tomorrow a virtual certainty. Copps was seen as the only swing vote on the five-member commission, and had been the target of recent lobbying efforts.

Democratic Commissioner Mignon Clyburn said in a separate statement that she plans to vote in favor of the rules, while Republicans Robert McDowell and Meredith Attwell Baker have both promised to vote against them.

Copps’s statement is below.

“These past three weeks have been devoted on my part to intensive discussions about ensuring the continued openness of the Internet and putting consumers, not Big Phone and Big Cable, in maximum control of their online experiences. I have been fighting for nearly a decade to make sure the Internet doesn’t travel down the same road of special interest consolidation and gate-keeper control that other media and telecommunications industries–radio, television, film and cable–have traveled. What an historic tragedy it would be to let that fate befall the dynamism of the Internet. The item we will vote on tomorrow is not the one I would have crafted. But I believe we have been able to make the current iteration better than what was originally circulated. If vigilantly and vigorously implemented by the Commission — and if upheld by the courts–it could represent an important milestone in the ongoing struggle to safeguard the awesome opportunity-creating power of the open Internet. While I cannot vote wholeheartedly to approve the item, I will not block it by voting against it. I instead plan to concur so that we may move forward. I do thank the Chairman for his engagement, and I owe a special debt of gratitude to Commissioner Mignon Clyburn for her thoughtful and creative work to improve this item.”

Reactions are quickly coming from net neutrality advocates. First out of the gate is FreePress, a nonpartisan advocacy group. Its Managing Director Craig Aaron isn’t happy.

“We are deeply disappointed that this Commission appears to be moving forward with deeply flawed rules that don’t live up to the promises of the president or the FCC chairman to protect the free and open Internet. These rules appear to be flush with giant loopholes, and the FCC chairman seems far more concerned with winning the endorsement of AT&T and the cable lobbyists than with listening to the millions of Americans who have pleaded with him to fix his proposal. This short-sighted decision is all too familiar to those who have watched the Obama administration and its appointees squander the opportunity for real change in favor of industry-written compromises that reward the biggest players from Wall Street to health care and now the Internet. There is overwhelming public support for real Net Neutrality, and this setback won’t stop those fighting to save the Internet.”

Next up is Gigi Sohn, president of Public Knowledge–another advocacy group:

The actions by the Federal Communications Commission fall far short of what they could have been. Instead of a rule that would protect everyone, from consumers to applications developers from predatory practices of telephone and cable companies, the Commission settled for much less. Instead of strong, firm rules providing clear protections, the Commission created a vague and shifting landscape open to interpretation. Consumers deserved better. The FCC should have fought for consumers, not put the burden on them to fight for their rights.

Meet Todd McKinnon, CEO Of Cloud Management Start-Up Okta

Todd McKinnon saw the first phase of the cloud computing revolution close-up. He joined Salesforce.com as its head of engineering in 2003 and saw firsthand how companies mistrusted the idea of using software they didn’t run on their own computers in their own buildings, but instead trusted to someone else.

Over time, CIOs everywhere got over their skepticism of the cloud, and Salesforce.com went on to become a billion-dollar company that is widely used in numerous industries.

But he knew there was more to it. Lots of other small companies where adapting the Salesforce software-as-a-service model for other job functions besides tracking sales relationships. There’s SuccessFactors, which tracks employee performance, and Workday, which manages basic company operations like payroll and benefits.

For companies large and small that are embracing the cloud, that’s a lot to manage. McKinnon’s plan with Okta, a start-up company that’s received investments from Andreessen Horowitz, Floodgate and SV Angel, is to make it easy for companies to take advantage of cloud applications and services, by giving them a single place from which to manage it all.

I caught up with McKinnon last week in Menlo Park, Calif., at the Sand Hill Road offices of Andreessen Horowtiz, which in July invested $10 million in Okta, its first cloud investment. The company is planning a big launch in January.

NewEnterprise: So your last job was at Salesforce.com, but it led directly to you starting Okta. Tell me about that.

Todd McKinnon: I went to Salesforce at the time their engineering team was really small. Their engineering team was only about 10 or 15 people. They brought me in to be the first non-founder VP of engineering. They wanted me to scale the company and scale the group.

NE: So you got into Salesforce early, and things look pretty good over there now. Why did you leave?

TM: We had a booth at Dreamforce, and I saw a lot of my old friends there, and they asked me the same thing. I was at the tip of the spear in terms of seeing this transition in the industry. When I first started at Salesforce, companies were first starting to adopt the cloud and the software-as-service approach, but they were really skeptical. They had to scrutinize everything about it before they would buy it. One time I spent an entire weekend–I remember because it was my birthday–reviewing the code line by line with a big bank, for security. Over the years, that attitude changed. Rather than view it as something risky, they viewed it as beneficial, and they got more comfortable with the risk.

That to me was an important moment. When the industry shifts, that creates an opportunity, the kind of opportunity that small companies can take advantage of. I couldn’t sit there knowing there was so much opportunity and so much disruption going on and watch someone else go out and do it.

NE: Clearly we’re seeing Salesforce broadening out from its original offering. We’ve seen it launch Database.com and acquire Heroku in recent days. It didn’t occur to you to try and build this within Salesforce?

TM: It did. But there’s challenges there in terms of what the company is going to focus on and how long to focus on the primary mission before it branches out. I wanted to build a company. I wanted to have an impact, but I also wanted to build a company.

NE: So explain how you got from there to starting Okta.

TM: I had been thinking about building a monitoring system for big companies rolling out their mission-critical cloud services, like call centers. The idea was to monitor performance and gather compliance data in a way that was similar to what companies were already doing with the systems they had in-house.

I called a bunch of people who said that monitoring was a good idea. But one thing I heard was that it would only make sense to large companies. The other thing was that there were a lot of companies, some big, some small, that were deploying cloud applications. I started to see companies who were running most of their IT infrastructure outside the firewall. Once you think about a world where the center of gravity is outside the firewall you have to solve a lot of problems in the cloud that have already been solved inside the firewall.

I kept running into a simple example: If you have a Windows network, you have file servers and print servers and email. Microsoft has made that work well. But if you’re trying to build your corporate IT in the cloud, there’s a bunch of unsolved problems. You have some file utility, and email from Google or a hosted Microsoft Exchange, and maybe a print driver on your copy machine. What I learned is, before anyone needs monitoring, there were all these basic problems that needed solving.

NE: What kind of basic problems?

TM: There’s the the most basic problem of identity. How do you get users authenticated in a consistent way across all these cloud services? How do I make sure that when someone joins the company they get access to what they need to do their job? And more importantly when someone leaves the company, how do I make sure that they don’t have access to all the things they did when they were an employee?

When you run your corporate IT in the cloud, all your files and services are out there on the Internet and so you have to make sure you de-provision that user’s access. There’s a great bonus with the cloud that files are accessible from everywhere, on your PC or your phone. The downside is that they’re available everywhere and so you have to manage that. If you’re truly going to reap all the benefits of the cloud, like lower costs, in the next five to 10 years, companies are going to have to rethink how they build their networks.

NE: And that’s where Okta comes in?

TM: Right. We set out to build a domain controller for this new type of network–we call it a Cloud Area Network.

NE: At most companies there’s a mixture of infrastructure that’s in the building or in a managed data center, mixed with some cloud services. What you’re saying is that if I want to manage my infrastructure on things like Amazon Cloud Services or Microsoft Azure or Google Apps, some combination like that, then you’ve got to have a way to control who can access what.

TM: Exactly. Okta sits in the middle of your services, and knows what you use. Right now it’s focused on applications: Workday, Taleo, Success Factors, GoToMeeting, Salesforce. We have hundreds of prepackaged combinations. You tell it which ones you have, and you get three very concrete benefits right out of the box. The first is that your users get a single dashboard to access them all, with a single sign-on. Administration staff gets a single point to create accounts across all of your services. And then, most importantly, when someone leaves you can automatically de-provision them, so you can cut them off from the services all at once.

NE: So what are your launch plans?

TM: We’ve been selling in the marketplace for a while now, and the main thing we’re going to talk about is customers.

NE: That was my next question. What kind of companies are you going to be talking about?

TM: These are known companies. They’re not huge. Our biggest installation is about 1,500 seats. But when companies deploy it they want to give it to every employee because it manages so many applications. One customer has 21 applications in there, and one had 15. It crosses all the job functions, and touches all employees.

NE: So if you counted up all the active seats in use right now, how many would it be?

TM: We’re going to be announcing that in January too! (Laughs.)

NE: So what’s the business model?

TM: It’s a subscription model just like all the other software-as-service companies out there. It’s based on per user, per month. The default is that they choose to license for the whole company so we get a lot of broad deployments.

NE: So where do you want to be a year from now?

TM: The big thing a year from now, we need to start to position ourselves toward our bigger vision of becoming a platform. The initial product is easy to understand. Over time we need to turn it into something bigger. We want to get beyond the applications and turn it into a platform-as-service. We’re starting with applications, because that’s where the adoption is right now. Ultimately we want to be the controlling layer for a lot more: Programming tools like Heroku and Force.com and Google App Engine, and then there’s the infrastructure-as-service layer like Amazon. Our ambition is to be a domain controller for all of it.

Exclusive: TMS Acquires Online Video Guide CastTV

Online video search start-up CastTV has been acquired by Tribune Media Services, the widely used entertainment guide metadata provider.

CastTV was founded in 2006 by a husband and wife team, and had raised $3.1 million from investors including Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Ron Conway and Marc Andreessen.

Though she wouldn’t comment on the terms of the deal, CastTV co-founder and President Alex Vikati said, “CastTV was profitable so we weren’t forced to make any decisions.” She, CastTV’s co-founder and CEO Edwin Ong, and their three employees will make up TMS’s Silicon Valley office, rather than moving to join TMS at its Chicago headquarters.

CastTV had stayed relatively under the radar compared to newcomers like Clicker.com, but it still has four million monthly uniques. Unlike Clicker, which has focused on curation and personalization, CastTV takes more of a pure search and aggregation approach. It historically did not exclude unauthorized content streams (though when I checked this morning, this no longer seemed to be the case). CastTV has also focused on detail-oriented features such as device awareness, so it will filter video results to only the formats playable on a certain device.

TMS will combine CastTV’s databases with its metadata service, and operate CastTV.com in conjunction with its own entertainment guide Zap2it.com, which has about double the audience.

TMS counts just about every content provider and guide service as a customer, including Microsoft, Google, TiVo, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, IMDb and the New York Times.

How to Remove DRM protection from iTunes

iTunes is a champion of music, video downloading services. The user-friendly iTunes makes downloading music, videos quick and hassle-free; however, iTunes purchased songs and videos will not run on any other media player except for Apple products due to digital rights managements (DRM) which limit usages of devices or files.
This is a tutorial to remove DRM protection from iTunes. Then you can burn the iTunes videos to DVD and convert the iTunes videos to other format files.

Part 1, Remove DRM protection from iTunes Music using iTunes + CD-R/W
Probably the most widely accepted method for stripping purchased songs of DRM protection is burning tracks to a CD-R/W then re-importing back into the iTunes library. A method guaranteed to free you of DRM madness.
Create an iTunes playlist containing your purchased songs.
Insert a blank CD-R or a CD-RW.
Burn the playlist to disk.
Re-import the songs after a successful burn.
Delete the original purchased tracks.

Part 2, Remove DRM protection from iTunes using software
1. Remove DRM protection from iTunes music and videos for free on PC.
QTFairUse. It can Remove DRM protection from iTunes music and videos for free.
QTFairUse(.) for ITunes will allow you to convert protected m4p format files purchased in the iTunes Music Store to unprotected m4a files, playable everywhere. It supports fully automated conversion of all protected tracks in your iTunes library.
It will confirm whether you want to convert all the files in your library. Press 'y' and Enter to do that. Next it will ask if you want to skip already converted tracks (e.g. from the previous run). Press 'n' and Enter to overwrite them, 'y' and Enter to skip. After that, the script will begin conversion of all files in the library. Converted files will have m4a extension and will reside next to their m4p counterparts. To stop the conversion in process, press Ctrl-C in the console window. You can also close iTunes.
If you want to convert specific m4p files, pass their filenames as the commanding parameter. You can do that by e.g. dragging and dropping the files on QTFairUse6.exe. QTFairUse6 will convert them and exit. You can find converted files next to the originals, with m4a extension.Remove DRM Protection

MyFairTunes. It can Remove DRM protection from iTunes music for free.

2. Remove DRM protection from iTunes music on Mac.
The software I introduce:
FairGame It is a freeware to Remove DRM protection from iTunes music on Mac OS X. FairGame(http://seidai.50webs.com/Seidai%20Software_files/FairGame.zip)will convert the songs you bought on the iTunes Store to an unprotected format (using iTunes default encoder) and keep all the original metadata, lyrics and artwork. FairGame doesn't do lossless DRM stripping. It re-encodes protected AAC files purchased in iTMS into unprotected AAC file using Apple's iMovie software.
What you MUST DO (only once) to get FairGame to work:
enable "Access for assistive devices" in the "Universal Access" system preference
select "Place clip in Movie Timeline" in the "Import" preference of iMovie HD
Then you can simply

Three Ways to Download Music To Your Zune Player

There are several ways you can download your Zune movies, Zune music videos, Zune MP3's and Zune software to your Zune player.
1) The first is from the Microsoft Zune Marketplace and other Pay-Per-Download Sites which have movie downloads, music downloads, music video downloads, and more. The problem with downloading Zune files from places like Microsoft Zune Marketplace is the cost. The Microsoft Zune Marketplace charges a monthly subscription service called the "Zune Pass" with unlimited downloads for $14.99 per month. The pay-per-download sites charge on the average about $1.00 per Zune download. So, with a Zune player that has a 30 gigabyte hard drive whic allows users to store up to 7,500 Zune MP3s, 2,500 pictures or 100 hours of Zune movies and Zune music videos, that is going to cost a fortune to fill up.

2) WiFi - Microsoft Zune players has a technology called WiFi which allows friends and family to share Zune music, Zune movies, Zune software, pictures and Zune music videos both effortlessly and wirelessly. If you have a cool picture or something you found on a zune download site you can share it easily. Anytime you come in close range of another Zune player you can connect to that Zune player via WiFi and share your Zune downloads. The only drawback is you can only play a shared song only 3 times before it is deleted although, pictures are saved and can be viewed many times. It's a nice feature but needs improvement.

3) The third way is by ripping your music CD's to your Zune player. The definition of ripping means converting CD music files to a file format usable by your Zune player which is either in MP3 or WMA file format. After doing this, all you need to do is plug your Microsoft Zune player into your computer with a USB cable and transfer the ripped music files to your Zune player using the provided Zune software.

1. Put the music CD that you want ripped into your PC.
2. After the media player opens. Select the song you would like to copy and click on RIP.
3. Save the song you just ripped to a folder of your choice.
4. Plug in your Zune Player to your PC using the USB Cable. The Zune Software will automatically search for music that you saved in the folder on your PC. Select the files you want and manually drag and drop them into your Zune player's music folder.

Actually, Most Carriers Will Have Faster Tablets Next Year

Sprint made some headlines this week by touting to Forbes that it will have a tablet on its faster 4G data network next year.

However, the other U.S. carriers want people to know that they are planning faster-network tablets for 2011 as well.

Verizon, which launched its 4G network this month, said it will have both phones and tablets for the network by the middle of next year. T-Mobile said it too will have a 4G tablet, though T-Mobile uses that term to refer to HSDPA+, what most everyone else would call a faster version of its existing 3G network.

Only AT&T said it did not want to speculate on its product plans for next year. But then, it does sell an Apple product and certainly wouldn’t want to be seen as pre-announcing anything.

So, to summarize, if you want a tablet and are willing to wait until next year, you will probably be able to buy one on the faster network of your carrier of choice. If you buy an iPad or Galaxy Tab this year, it will run on the existing 3G network only.

Google Offers a Cloud-Based Safety Net for Microsoft Exchange

Email gets knocked a lot these days. It’s old-fashioned, slow and riddled with spam. Even so old-school a firm as Gartner is acknowledging that by 2014 social networking sites will overtake email as the dominant form of interpersonal communication for about 20 percent of business users.

But just wait until the office mail server goes down. Take away access to email, and it’s not uncommon for business to essentially stop for the few hours it takes to get the server back up. This is why many companies pay for email continuity services that take over when a corporate email server goes on the blink.

Google is jumping into that business with some additions to its Postini service for businesses, which it will announce today. The new service will be called Google Message Continuity, and it’s being aimed squarely at users of Microsoft’s Exchange 2003 and 2007. Messages, contacts, folders, calendars and other aspects of the corporate email environment are replicated within Gmail, constantly updated and synched so that in the event that the Exchange server crashes for a few hours or days, or if it goes down for scheduled maintenance, users can have access to their messages and keep getting things done from within Gmail until it’s fixed.

One benefit for Google is that any business that uses this has an easier time dumping Microsoft Exchange altogether and moving to Google Apps: Once you’ve got your corporate email environment replicated on Gmail, there’s no more worrying about the logistical headache associated with migrating from Exchange to Google Apps. Sneaky, right?

The new feature will be available for $13 per user per year to existing Postini customers, and for $25 per user per year to new customers. And here’s one thing I didn’t know: Postini, which is already a powerful weapon in the battle to control spam and email-borne viruses, is in use by about 80,000 businesses, accounting for more than 21 million end-users.

It’s a particularly interesting development coming just a day after Google lost out to Microsoft to provide cloud-based email, messaging and collaboration to the 120,000 employees of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in a deal worth about $27 million over three years. Google, for its part, won a similar contract with the General Services Administration, and is suing the U.S. Department of Interior over terms of contracts that it says favored Microsoft when that agency went shopping for a cloud email provider.

Step 1, Convert videos to mp4 format that compatible with Xbox 360.
Choose a small video to test for you first video, as encoding and conversion times can be lengthy if you choose a full movie. Try downloading a trailer for a movie in your favorite format that the Xbox 360 can’t read. Like: AVI, and a lot of other weird formats.
Open up Video Converter for Mac. Video Converter for Mac is a phenomenal video conversion tool, it can convert video formats from one to another with perfect output quality and high conversion speed for Mac OS X users. It supports all popular video formats including flv, MPEG1, MPEG2, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, AVI, M2TS, MPEG TS/TP (for HD Video), M4V, etc.

Choose output folder such as “Open Folder”.

Video Converter for Mac - merge

At the bottom right, click on the “Start” button. Then wait… , And the conversion speed is out of your surprise.

Step 2, connect your Mac and Xbox 360
Before you start configuring, open up Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities) and type "ifconfig en0" (zero, not a capital-o). You're looking for the bit that says "inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". In my case, the number I get here is 192.168.2.1 Second, note down the IP address of your wireless router, which in my case is 192.168.0.1

On your Mac
1. Connect your Mac to your wireless internet connection
2. Connect your Xbox 360 to your Mac via Ethernet
3. In System Preferences -> Sharing, enable Internet Sharing between your Airport and Ethernet connection

On your Xbox 360
1. Start up your Xbox and navigate to the Network settings menu
2. Under IP address, enter the number you got from the "ifconfig en0" command earlier on, but with the final number one place higher. In my case, I take the 192.168.2.1, and input 192.168.2.2 in the IP address box on my Xbox 360.
3. Under subnet, input 255.255.255.0
4. Under router/gateway, enter the number you got earlier from the "ifconfig en0" command. In my case, that's "192.168.2.1"
5. Move onto DNS. Enter the IP address of your wireless router (in my case, "192.168.0.1") in both the primary and secondary IP address fields
6. Leave PPPoE and advanced settings blank (i.e. OFF and Automatic)
7. You should now be able to connect to Xbox Live via your internet sharing Mac

Step 3, Play Video File on Xbox 360:
First, on your Mac, open up your new file in VLC and in QuickTime. Make sure it can play in both (Not necessarily at the same time). If you have done that, now it is time to move to your 360. Follow these instructions:
Turn on your Xbox 360

Turn Xbox 360

Navigate over to the “Media Tab”, and select the “Videos” option.

Xbox 360 - Media Tab

Note: Since the Xbox 360 Dashboard update of about 6 months ago, once you click on”Videos” it will just show you all of the videos on your Xbox 360 hard drive. So presses “X” to change the current source. Then browse down to your Apple / Mac computer. Mine is an iMac.

Click on the “Movies Folder”. That is where you should have saved the file there earlier.
Now browse through your video files and select your sweet, newly converted video file, and play it!put Video on Xbox 360

All the operations is just like pie. So you can watch any your favorite video on your Xbox 36o from your Mac easily Now. Watch and Enjoy it!

How to convert TS to MP4, MOV, etc on Mac OS X

What is TS?
Transport stream(TS, TP, MPEG-TS, or M2T) is a communications protocol for audio, video, and data which is specified in MPEG-2 Part 1, Systems (ISO/IEC standard 13818-1). Its design goal is to allow multiplexing of digital video and audio and to synchronize the output. Transport stream offers features for error correction for transportation over unreliable media, and is used in broadcast applications such as DVB and ATSC. It is contrasted with program stream, designed for more reliable media such as DVDs.
TS format is a container format that encapsulates pocketsize elementary streams and other data.

Modifications of transport stream specification for random-access media (M2TS)
Transport Stream was designed for tape and broadcast, but it required modifications for usage with random-access media devices like new generation of digital camcorders that record onto DVD disks, hard drives or solid-state memory cards.
Random-access based systems may save data packets into a temporary buffer if a storage device is not ready, for example on device startup. Packets are written out of order, and to keep track of them, a 4-byte timecode (TC) is added to standard 188-byte packets. The result is a 192-byte packet. This is what is informally called M2TS stream. Sony calls it "BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream". JVC calls it TOD (possibly an abbreviation for "Transport stream on media") when used in HDD-based camcorders like GZ-HD7.[9] M2TS transport stream is also used for AVCHD video files, which often have MTS extension.

Viacom Asks for a Do-Over on YouTube

As promised, here’s Viacom’s appeal in the YouTube copyright case, where a federal court ruled overwhelmingly in Google’s favor earlier in the year.

Viacom’s filing runs 72 pages, but here’s the gist: It argues that if the appeals court lets the lower ruling stand, then it will “radically transform the functioning of the copyright system and severely impair, if not completely destroy, the value of many copyrighted creations.”

Google’s response: “We regret that Viacom continues to drag out this case. The court here, like every other court to have considered the issue, correctly ruled that the law protects online services like YouTube, which remove content when notified by the copyright holder that it is unauthorized. We will strongly defend the court’s decision on appeal.”

YouTube Adds Personalized Channels to Lengthen Living Room Sessions

YouTube today is launching a personalization update to its Leanback viewing mode, which is meant to be played on televisions. The new “Personalized Channels”–which is honestly a feature I assumed Leanback already had, given the Google-owned site has been experimenting in this area for a while–will queue up videos for any keyword to play continuously.

Leanback users can give feedback on whether or not they like recommendations, and the channel will refine future suggestions automatically. It seems very similar to streaming music on Pandora. The idea is to offer users a never-ending stream of videos they like, so they’ll watch YouTube longer.

Leanback is not a platform-specific app, but rather a full-screen version of YouTube accessible through any browser. It’s intended for Web-connected televisions.

The “user base [of such devices] is small by YouTube standards,” said YouTube Group Product Manager Shiva Rajaraman, but he added that YouTube users who watch through Leanback already spend 30 minutes per session on average, two times longer than sessions on the Web.

Of course, 30 minutes happens to be the length of many traditional television programs.

Leanback at present doesn’t have much in the way of social features, and it doesn’t include specialized ad formats for the living room. It is also not the default YouTube option on Google TV. Rajaraman said all these things are likely to be added in the future. YouTube has recently been doing all sorts of launches around Leanback, including adding overlay and pre-roll advertisements, showing more premium videos from partners and providing a remote control app for Android.

Motorola Split Set for Jan. 4

Breaking up is, well, a lot of paperwork.

Motorola filed the details Tuesday afternoon on its plan to split itself in two. The spinoff of the cellphone unit will take place Jan. 4, with holders getting one share of the mobile unit, known as Motorola Mobility, for every eight shares of Motorola they own. The remaining Motorola company will then have a one-for-seven reverse stock split, which would have the effect of boosting the per-share price (but not the inherent value) of the suddenly smaller company.

The split will be made before the market opens on Jan. 4 to shareholders of record as of Dec. 21.

“Today’s announcement marks another important milestone toward the upcoming separation that is expected to benefit Motorola, its stockholders, as well as each company’s respective customers and employees,” Motorola’s co-CEOs Greg Brown and Sanjay Jha said in a statement. “We look forward to taking advantage of the opportunities before us as we begin the new year as two independent, publicly traded companies.”

Motorola Mobility will trade under the ticker symbol MMI, while the remaining Motorola, known as Motorola Solutions, will use the ticker symbol MSI.

Whether all this splitting and name changing will boost the company’s value remains to be seen.

If you receive an error while trying to rip the DVD (like the one shown in the screenshot above), you will need to use another program such as DVD Decrypter to copy the DVD files off of the disc on to your hard drive. You need to minus the copy protections first. Click here to read how to use DVD decypher to minus the copy protections of DVD.

DVD decypher

Step 3. Adjust compression for individual Titles (optional).
DVD Shrink will automatically select the highest possible quality settings that will fit on your disc. You could accept the settings that DVD Shrink chooses. You can also increase the quality of the main movie file by reducing or eliminating other video and audio files on the DVD.
Many modern DVDs will contain bonus footage, trailers, multiple surround sound modes, and other settings that one can reduce or eliminate to improve the quality of the main movie feature.
The main movie quality setting is reported to the left of a slider bar in the top right of the screen. In the screenshot below we see that the default setting requires that the main movie be compressed to 48.2% of its original level to fit on the disc. You can increase this percentage to improve the final quality of the backed-up DVD. But the output file will be larger.

backup DVD Movie - setting

The way in which one goes about improving the quality of the main movie will be different depending on your specific needs. For example, when “Dolby Digital” and “DTS” 5.1 audio tracks are available, you can remove “DTS” (to save hundreds of megabytes), you can also choose to preserve “DTS” and reduce or eliminate other items from the DVD.
Some of the settings I made to this particular DVD were:
--Removed “5.1-ch French” audio track (went from 48.2% to 55.4% compression for main movie).
--Replaced certain Titles with “Still Image” (keep reading for more on this).
To improve the quality of the main movie, you'll need to reduce or eliminate other DVD features, each called a “Title” in DVD Shrink. Click the “plus sign” next to “Extras” in the menu to view the other titles.

DVD Shrink

The Title I've selected below was 72MB. In this case the video was a “behind the scenes” feature that I did not wish to keep. Since one cannot completely remove any of the “Titles,” the next best thing is to replace them with a still image. In order to do this, select the title you want to replace, and choose “Still Image” from the drop-down menu in the top right. In this case the file went from 72MB to 66MB. The still image is configurable, simply drop an image of your own into the aptly named Still Images directory found under Program Files > DVD Shrink.

Step 4, Burn the re-encoded files to disc.

burn file

Click “Backup DVD” and Now select the folder where your temporary files will be saved. DVD Shrink needs to save a bunch of files on your computer (that actually compose your movie) so that it can burn that movie back onto another DVD. This is why you had to clear 5 gigs of space on your hard drive. Once the DVD backup has been burned, you can go ahead and delete these temporary files (the program does not do this itself).
You may as well select “Region Free” (default) under the DVD Region tab.
on the Burn Settings tab make sure “Maximum” burn speed is selected in the drop-down menu.
Once you have the settings the way you like them, begin the burn process. You'll see the “Encoding” happening first. There is a video preview that will show you where you are, but I believe that the encoding process goes slower with this setting enabled.

burn DVD movie - Encoding

Once the files have been copied to your hard drive, your original DVD movie will eject from your computer.
You will also have a pop up asking you to put a blank DVD into the DVD burning drive of your computer that you previously selected.
Exchange the original DVD movie for a blank, burnable DVD. Push the blank DVD into the drive. DVD Shrink will begin burning the new DVD automatically in a few seconds. Now you will get a pop up that shows the progress while the program burns your new DVD movie. Once the new DVD has been burned, you will get a window that tells you that it's done. Click OK, close the program, and take your new DVD movie backup. All Done!

Some problems the new iPod touch users may meet

1. How to change iTunes to recognize the new iPod touch
Some New iPod users may meet the situation that your iTunes can not detect your new iPod nano, iPod touch, or iPod Classic. It should recognize it immediately. If it doesn't, download the latest version of iTunes. The problem will be solved:
1) Re-launch iTunes, with and without your iPod plugged in.
2) With iTunes open, reset your iPod Touch
(here:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305743 ) Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds until the Apple logo appears.
3) Restart your computer leaving your iPod touch plugged in
Note: If you uninstall iTunes from a computer, it will be uninstalled for all the users. But it will show up again for all users once you re-install it again. Before uninstalling each user should backup his/her playlists so they can bring them back when the re-install is completed. No music for any of the users will be removed by iTunes. It will remain intact where it is saved.

2.'I can't turn on my iPod'
I have a 1st or 2nd generation video iPod (80 gig).
My computer is windows 2000 so I downloaded the windows 2000 iTunes. So I decided to update my iPod, it was updated and it was fine. It ran out of power. Then it won't turn on? I tried to charge it but it just keeps saying please wait such and such. I left it there for like 2 hours already, and still it didn't charge up... Is the problem because I updated my iPod or something else? And when I opened my computer, iTunes asked me if I can format my iPod into windows. I put yes, it didnt do anything. So I have to problems, its not charging.. and its not turning on.
by Ashley :'My friend had this same problem a few years ago.She just left it plugged in to her computer for a few days, waited it out... eventually the problem fixed itself on its own. I'd say just wait it out for a day or two, and if it's still having problems, take it in to your nearest Circuit City or something.”
by Karat :'its the most popular iPod problem. If you drain the battery fully, you're screwed. Basically the battery is down, but the darn thing wont charge unless you connect it to the usb and the usb wont detect it unless it has charge! So please take it to your nearest apple outlet.”
by Kylla :'The one thing you never want to do with an iPod is let it run out of power, not good for it at all :P I've done it a few times but try to avoid it. What you want to do is hold the menu button and the play/pause button at the SAME time and just wait for it. It should restart it. Thats how my iPod works, yours could be different so experiment with the buttons. Try holding perhaps the center button and the play/pause button? or center button and the menu button? Try to see which two buttons will restart it, its bound to work. But hold BOTH of them down at the SAME time with one hand..and be patient, wait for about 10-15 seconds or so. :)”

3. Why does my 30G iPod video always die quickly?
Even when I am just listening to music. It shuts off after about 45 min. And that is a problem because I am going on a plane trip soon and I plan to watch a movie on my iPod, but movies eat your batttery. Does this happen to anyone else???? How can I make the battery life last longer. btw, it is only like a year old.
by dipin :'In an iPod the battery life is different.
it doesnt depend on how old it is rather it depends on how many times you have charged and discharged it.
for increasing the battery life you should fully charge the battery every time you are charging it . and secondly you should never let it discharge completely . put it on charging just before it shows the red signal and disconnect it only when it is fully charged.
sorry to say but now u'll have to get the battery replaced from apple reseller if you want to watch complete movie the battery life as said by apple is 500 complete cycles of charging and discharging”
by sugadoll :'The same thing happened to me. The problem is that your computer can't detect a completly dead iPod, but you need the computer to charge it so your screwed. j/k I solved it by pluging it into my ihome dock that plugs into the wall. So if you have a wall iPod dock or a car one you can charge it enough so that the computer can detect it. Problem solved.

Shunned Profiling Technology on the Verge of Comeback

One of the most potentially intrusive technologies for profiling and targeting Internet users with ads is on the verge of a comeback, two years after an outcry by privacy advocates in the U.S. and Britain appeared to kill it.

The technology, known as “deep packet inspection,” is capable of reading and analyzing the “packets” of data traveling across the Internet. It can be far more powerful than “cookies” and other techniques commonly used to track people online because it can be used to monitor all online activity, not just Web browsing. Spy agencies use the technology for surveillance.

Now, two U.S. companies, Kindsight Inc. and Phorm Inc., are pitching deep packet inspection services as a way for Internet service providers to claim a share of the lucrative online ad market.

Yes, Cord Cutting Is Real, Says Report That The Cable Guys Don’t Believe

Back to the cord-cutting debate!

Research firm SNL Kagan says the U.S. pay-TV business lost 119,000 subscribers last quarter. That’s only the second time in history that this has happened, and the first time was the previous quarter.

And it’s important to note Kagan is talking about all pay-TV businesses, not just the cable guys. Or more accurately: The cable guys like Time Warner Cable and Comcast are losing more customers (741,000) than the satellite guys and telcos like Verizon are adding (621,000).

If you want to spin this positively for the pay-TV business, you can argue that the losses are slowing: In Q2, pay TV lost 216,000 subs.

And if you want to be a little less positive, you can argue, as the cable guys do, that if they are losing customers, it’s because the economy stinks.

Nonsense, says the cord-cutting crowd, who believes that people are starting to leave pay TV, in increasing numbers, for a combination of the Internet, rabbit ears and the likes of Netflix and Apple TV.

And Kagan is with the cord cutters here. From their release:
“It is becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss the impact of over-the-top substitution on video subscriber performance, particularly after seeing declines during the period of the year that tends to produce the largest subscriber gains due to seasonal shifts back to television viewing and subscription packages.”

Or in English. People are cord-cutting. It’s happening now.

But here’s the thing: There’s a valid reason for the pay-TV guys to say they don’t see what Kagan is talking about. Because they don’t. Or at least they have numbers that say otherwise.

Here’s Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, who owns several very successful cable networks, speaking at an industry conference today. “The trend, as far as we can see it, continues up…it’s all good,” he told the New York Times’ David Carr. “They’re not cutting.”

And look at these numbers from cable powerhouse Viacom, whose CEO Philippe Dauman just dismissed cord-cutting talk as “much ado about nothing”. They show Viacom’s overall subscriber count, network by network, for the third quarter. And all of the domestic channels’ sub numbers, at least, have increased in the last year (click to enlarge):

So something, somewhere doesn’t add up.
